Twyfelfontein Rock Engravings

THE ETCHINGS OF THE ANCIENTS

The Lion Man

A place which is riddled with the traces of our ancestors who roamed the vast rock deserts of Damaraland. Twyfelfontein is steeped in history. Both of David Levin and his family that settled the area but also from the Damara people who lived off the land eons before their arrival. At Twyfelfontein and the surrounding area many rock engravings can be found. With the most significant of those being at the homestead site of the Levin family at Twyfelfontein. Twyfelfontein is a Afrikaans word meaning "doubtful spring" since the little water source the family had found in the area always seemed to be about to dry out. But the spring still runs till this day, though with very little flow. The rock engravings found in the area tell a colorful story of those who made them. Utilized to transmit information and also to teach. These rock engravings range from images of people, crude maps, to animal tracks and silhouettes. The most famous of these being the Twyfelfontein Lion Man engraving. Which depicts a Lion with a human hand on the end of its tail. Symbolizing a shaman in trance its thought. A place in Namibia which truly inspires respect for those who lived in its harsh conditions.
